How to set a custom song ringtone on android nexus

Under the settings section of an Android Nexus phone, there are only a handful of options for your ringtone by default. With no options to 'select from phone' it isn't immediately obvious how to do this. In this article we'll be looking at the options for customising your ringtone.

Get your song

The first step is to get the song or tune you want to use onto your phone. If the song you're after is available online for free, then this makes it even easier as you don't even need to connect your phone up to a computer.

As an example site, check out Zedge.net offering a range of free ring tones. One of the great things about this site is that it even provides you with a QR Code that you can scan on your phone to go directly to the page url for download. For this example, we'll download Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music.

If the song you want to use is on a computer, see the section below 'Customise without an app'. Note if you intend on using the 'App' option below, you'll be able to access songs on other devices such as Dropbox

Customise with an App

One of the great things about being on Android is the wealth of apps that integrate so well with the core system. For this scenario we'll be installing an app called 'Rings Extended' that will upgrade the settings area so we can choose other music on the device. It also offers a few other awesome features we'll come to shortly.

  • Download Rings Extended in the play store
  • Install the app
  • Go to 'Settings' on your phone
  • Under 'Device' choose 'Sound'
  • Select 'Phone ringtone'
  • You'll now notice that you are asked to complete the action using 'Media Storage' or 'Rings Extended', choose 'Rings Extended'
  • Select 'Media Ringtones'
  • You'll now see a list of the music tracks available on your phone
  • Select the song you wish to use and press 'OK'

If you're using other services like Dropbox you'll see this listed under 'OTHER MEDIA' under the settings section as an alternative source of sound files.

Bonus Features

In addition to our main aim, the Rings Extended app also allows you to set a ring tone for individual contacts and adjust specific notifications such as email alerts or new messages.

Customise without an app

If you don't want to clutter your phone with apps for such a simple requirement, there is an alternative method to achieving a custom ringtone:

  • Connect your phone to your computer
  • Open the device folder via 'My Computer'
  • Inside the folder 'media' create a folder called 'ringtones' (if it doesn't already exist)
  • Copy the song you wish to use into this folder
  • Go to your setting
  • Under 'Device' choose 'Sound'
  • Select 'Phone ringtone' and choose the new song

If you find that the song you added isn't available, try switching your phone off and on again.

Incidently you can use this same technique with other folders titled 'notifications' and 'alarms' if you would like to customise these in the same way.
